Developing a graphic novel style

A1 Comic book spread. Indian ink

A3 Media trials: biro, crayon, pencil
A3 Acetate and acrylic
A4 Media trial: Comparison of indian ink and acrylic

Sketchbook work showing media trials for a comic book style response to the theme "Urban Life". In this project, I took inspiration from the Dave Gibbons work in the comic "Watchmen", through the use of 3x3 panels and an orange/ green/ purple colour palette. The final two pieces were my first pieces of formal work where I thoroughly explored displaying a graphic novel style narrative.

The Hunt

Approximately 20cm tall. Sculpture response to the them "Feral", and part of explorations of the necessary violence of hunting. This sculpture looks at combining 3D work and previous illustrations.
A3. Panels exploring jackals and wolves hunting, while also experimenting with a limited, primary colour palette and fine brush line work.

Botany mixed media responses

Top: ~~120x 40 cm. Acrylic, sand, marker pen, and wax crayon, on corrugated card
Middle: A3. Mixed Media
Bottom: A3 Sketchbook page. Acrylic

These three pieces are responses to the theme "Botany", with the second and third images acting as development for the first. With this theme, I explored ideas of life and death, with my final piece displaying a timeline from sprouting seeds to wilting lilies. This final piece combines elements of expressive painting, watercolour illustration, and displaying a narrative.
